SCANZ exists to promote the science and technology of paint, printing ink, pigments, varnishes, resins, plastics, solvents, drying and non-drying chemicals through discussion, lectures, conferences, exhibitions and printed papers.

By doing so SCANZ works to raise the standard and the scientific, technical and professional knowledge of persons engaged in these industries.

There are two sections, based in Auckland and Wellington, with a branch of the Wellington section active in Christchurch.

Each section has its own committee, headed by a Section Chairman, which is responsible for regional operations.

National activities are coordinated by a management committee headed by the National President and made up of delegates from both sections.

Membership is personal, rather than corporate, and is by application.
