ABSTRACT
Manufacturers are coming under increasing pressure from direct customers, end consumers, competitors and regulatory bodies to improve the sustainability, safety and performance of their products.

In addition to this, with current market situation when biocide alternatives and supply is tight, there is a need for innovative way to protect the products sold against biodegradation, especially those sold in the retail market segment.

This paper presents a styrene acrylic dispersion of good high pH stability coupled with improved performance in opacity, binding capability and scrub resistance to meet the current market needs.

With it, also an opportunity for cost saving from the omission of in-can biocide in the coating formulations.

Lim Eng Seng is attached to Synthomer Malaysia, heading the APEC Regional Functional Solutions Technical Service department.

He has been associated with surface coatings industry for the last 30 years, having led the ICI Paints R&D and Technical Service portfolio in Malaysia, PR China and SEA over his 20 years of service with the company.
During this period, he has developed various products for ICI Paints Decorative, Performance Coatings and Refinish markets, and has constantly interacted with the market in various capacities.

Eng Seng joined Synthomer 9 years ago to head the R&D portfolio for 2 years before moving over to the external market engaging technical service role, covering the Asia & ANZ region.
