Dr Matthew Allen

Beneath the Surface at the EPA

Overview of the regulatory, system and process changes at the EPA (past, present and future).

Matthew is a Senior Advisor in the Hazardous Substances group at the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Matthew has been involved in chemical regulation for over 10 years, joining the EPA's predecessor organisation, ERMA, in January 2008. He has been primarily involved in processing hazardous substance applications and reassessments, with expertise as a risk assessor. Of note, Matthew was involved in the EPA's reassessments of antifouling paints, and organophosphate and carbamate pesticides, as well as overseeing the development of a number of new group standards. More recently Matthew was part of the EPA's Working Safer Reforms team, and has been part of the Hazardous Substances Reassessment team since it was established in January 2017. Prior to working as a regulator, Matthew worked in the UK chemical industry for seven years as pilot plant team leader and process development chemist, producing niche phosphorus products.
