ABSTRACT:

A Case Study in the Development of Chrome Free Diffusion Coatings for Gas Turbine Hot Gas Path Components

This paper will detail the development of totally chrome free diffusion coatings as replacement for traditional chrome 6 containing products, to include Sermaloy J and Ipal.

The many pitfalls encountered on the development path will be discussed before the project conclusion with an internationally approved coating.


BIOGRAPHY:

Graham Armstrong is currently employed as the sales and technology mentor to the directors and sales management team of Indestructible Paint Ltd, having been the Global Technical Sales Manager for 14 years. A major part of the role is supporting the direct contact with engineers and chemists of the aerospace primes and tier 1 suppliers to promote the high-performance products of the company and secure approvals for Indestructible products against key specifications. In addition, full technical and application support is provided to customers throughout the world.

He manages the training offer to clients, to include both theoretical and practical events worldwide. He has been closely involved with the company response to the REACH regulations and provides dissemination of information on work being conducted on authorisation of annex XIV listed chemicals and the research into alternatives.

Graham currently holds managerial positions within major Institutes and Associations linked to surface engineering and materials finishing.

He is the current Secretary General, a Past President and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials Finishing (IMF).

Additionally, he is the Immediate Past President of the Oil & Colour Chemists Association (OCCA) and has accepted the role of vice-chairman of the recently formed Surface Engineering Leadership Forum (SELF).

With almost 55 years’ experience within laboratory, technical service, marketing, sales and general management functions within the industrial surface coatings industry, Graham is eminently qualified to discuss most aspects of high-performance surface finishing. During this working lifetime, he has championed the use of paints and surface coatings in several major market areas in addition to aerospace, including automotive, the furniture and joinery industries, white goods and coatings for plastics.
