ABSTRACT:

How timber is supporting the navigation to a better future

The construction sector is going through a transition, reverting to traditional natural materials to support in reducing carbon and adverse environmental impacts, improving health and well being and expediting build programmes.

17 percent of the global CO2 emissions come from the construction sector. This combined with frequently high operating carbon has a significant adverse impact on our environment.

How to we correct this imbalance? Mass timber or EWP provide one significant opportunity. EWP are light, reducing the foundations, significantly reduce the transportation cost of materials to site, and provide significant biophilic and physiological advantages to occupants.

Timber is the material of choice for +94 percent of low rise construction, but in contrast has sub five percent share of mid to high rise construction. This is our opportunity to transition the mid rise landscape to ecologically friendly, sustainable development that is faster to construct, more resilience and more desirable to be in.

Red Stag is the leader in structural timber and Engineered Wood Products (EWP) in New Zealand with over 60 years of experience, expanding traditional Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) with large scale Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). CLT is paving the way for the building material of choice based on its structural properties, speed of installation, fire resilience, and overall structural properties. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the configuration provides opportunity to supplement a larger percentage of the log that can be utilised for structural applications.

The presentation will discuss the various types of mass timber, their advantages, the opportunities that hybrid timber solutions provide, technical details, and discuss the misnomers and misconceptions associated with mass timber.
