How timber is supporting the navigation to a better future

The construction sector is going through a transition, reverting to traditional natural materials to support in reducing carbon and adverse environmental impacts, improving health and well being and expediting build programmes.

17 percent of the global CO2 emissions come from the construction sector. This combined with frequently high operating carbon has a significant adverse impact on our environment.

How to we correct this imbalance? Mass timber or EWP provide one significant opportunity. EWP are light, reducing the foundations, significantly reduce the transportation cost of materials to site, and provide significant biophilic and physiological advantages to occupants.

Timber is the material of choice for +94 percent of low rise construction, but in contrast has sub five percent share of mid to high rise construction. This is our opportunity to transition the mid rise landscape to ecologically friendly, sustainable development that is faster to construct, more resilience and more desirable to be in.

Red Stag is the leader in structural timber and Engineered Wood Products (EWP) in New Zealand with over 60 years of experience, expanding traditional Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) with large scale Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). CLT is paving the way for the building material of choice based on its structural properties, speed of installation, fire resilience, and overall structural properties. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the configuration provides opportunity to supplement a larger percentage of the log that can be utilised for structural applications.

The presentation will discuss the various types of mass timber, their advantages, the opportunities that hybrid timber solutions provide, technical details, and discuss the misnomers and misconceptions associated with mass timber.

Jason Cordes has been the Managing Director of Red Stag Investments for over 13 years after an extensive 20 year career abroad in executive and operation positions in the specialty chemical, petrochemical, and energy sectors within large multinational companies.

Throughout his career he has held a breath of senior executive, commercial, operational and project management positions in the US, Europe, Asia and Oceania. He obtained his education in New Zealand with undergraduate and post graduate technology degrees, majoring in Physics and Mathematics.

In transitioning back to New Zealand in 2010 from being the regional Managing Director of Evonik Degussa, the world’s largest specialty chemical company, he has applied himself to being the Managing Director for Red Stag Investments and its subsidiary group companies focusing on Engineered Wood Products, and integrated timber construction solutions.

Jason is now leading Red Stag’s expansion into Engineered Wood Products, with the new Cross laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) plant in Rotorua, Red Stag Timberlab in Auckland as well as the expansion of its Red Stag Wood Solutions Hamilton frame and truss manufacturing facility to include more advanced stick panelisation systems and broader factory based prefabrication solutions.

The Red Stag group is synonymous with wood processing, but also has significant interests in prefabrication, property development and forestry.
